Erchonia's Zerona laser getting a 75% negative review from patients:

Both the Erchonia and Microlight ML830 Cold Laser were cleared by the FDA in 2002. The Erchonia was the first 3a laser and the Microlight ML830 was the first 3b laser approved. 3a and 3b are classifications from the FDA, which is based on the unit's power. Class 3b has more power, then Class 3a.

Prior to November 15, 2006 both companies sold a laser around $10,000. The ML830® price has steadily gone down, as production materials have become more affordable. In fact all the laser manufacturers, with exception to Erchonia, have lowered their prices in recent years. But, Erchonia is still charging a premium for their products. This is mostly due to operating costs. They spend quite a bit of money on national seminars, and more specifically paying top industry speakers to sell their products.

The Swedish Laser Medical Society's website, is considered the BIBLE for cold laser therapy. They posted an interesting article on Erchonia. Here is one of the many quotes from them:

"Erchonia either shows little understanding of the conclusions that can be drawn from individual studies, or worse, knowingly chooses to ignore a vast body of scientific literature that states the opposite. For example, leading researchers in the US are using 830 nm for nerve regeneration"

Erchonia is based on a 632nm laser diode at 5 mW of power. A laser pointer from Sharper Image also uses a 632nm laser diode at 5 mW of power. Not that they are the same machine, but they use the same technology and specs.

 

FDA Warnings: This company has had its share of controversy over the years. Going back to their days as Tuco, the FDA has warned them several times about misleading and false statements about their products.

Because this is a Class IV laser with a very high energy output (2000 to 6000 mW depending on device), it has a much higher potential danger threshold. Its lowest setting is 1000 mW, which can limit its application and usefulness. As with the other Class IV devices, clinical evidence supporting the use of such high power is lacking. Power increment adjustments are limited to 1000mW at a time.

According to their 510K letter with the FDA: The K-Laser is a heating lamp.

The only laser manufacturers with a 510K clearance as a NHN (non thermal) laser are the ML830 & Erchonia Laser. Both companies have a specific clearance with the FDA.

This company, and others, are just piggy backing on an old heat lamp code. Instead of being approved as a cold laser (laser emitting diodes), they were approved as an LED (light emitting diodes) heat lamp.

CLASS IV WARNINGS:

FDA - Description of Class IV Laser (Laser Product Hazard): Immediate skin hazard and eye hazard from exposure to either the direct or reflected beam; may also present a FIRE HAZARD

Wikepedia: Class IV/4 lasers CAN BURN SKIN, and in some cases, even scattered light can cause eye and/or skin damage.

Europe (EN & IEC): Class IV is the highest class of laser radiation. Radiation in this class is very dangerous, and viewing of the diffuse reflection may be dangerous. Class 4 laser beams are CAPABLE OF SETTING FIRE to materials onto which they are projected.

 

  

If you are thinking of adding a Class IV laser to your practice, make sure you consult a malpractice lawyer. There have been many reported problems with Class IV laser. In order to use one, you must have a laser officer on staff. Many state associations are currently working to ban these lasers, due to the dangers.

A true COLD LASER is non thermal (no heat). It has been used worldwide for over 25 years, and is very safe to use in your practice.
