Prior to November 15, 2006 both companies made a laser costing around $10,000. The ML830® dropped its rate dramatically to better compete against the misleading LEDs on the market. It does not appear that Erchonia is doing the same. Erchonia has the same wavelength (632nm), power (5mw) and laser class (IIIa) as a laser pointer from Sharper Image. Based on these facts, its obvious the ML830® is the better laser and value.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It has came to our attention that a certain FDA Approved 632nm laser company is e-mailing a document comparing their product to the ML830 laser. Be warned this comparison is misleading. They are trying to compare what appears to be an in-house study with the ML830® double blind study from Baylor College of Medicine. The benefit of doing an in-house test is you can run it 100 times until you like the results.
The Baylor double blind study (using the ML830®) was an FDA IDE (investigational device exemption) sponosored study in support for its 510K FDA Clearance filing. This study lead to the ML830® being the first IIIb laser to get FDA clearance. Furthermore, Baylor used 145 patients for their double blind study, compared to 50 patients at the in-house study.
Is the FDA Investigating a certain 632nm laser company?

Because this is a Class IV laser with a very high energy output (2000 to 6000 mW depending on device), it has a much higher potential danger threshold. Its lowest setting is 1000 mW, which can limit its application and usefulness. As with the other Class IV devices, clinical evidence supporting the use of such high power is lacking. Power increment adjustments are limited to 1000mW at a time.

Terraquant is not a NHN (non thermal) FDA cleared laser diode device. They, like many, are using the old heat lamp clearance on the FDA books. It has only one weak laser diode (7mw) and a cluster of LEDs (light emitting diodes). See below chart for Laser vs LED/SLD.

Thor is the only company that has a license to market an 830nm device in the US under an agreement from Microlight Corporation of America (maker of the ML830 Laser). The primiary disadvantage of the Thor units is the price and the bulkiness of the driver units (control boxes). While they are robust, th
ey are also heavy, cumbersome and awkward.

No 510k Clerance has been issued by the FDA for this device (laser or led) that we can find at fda.gov.
Its illegal to use non- FDA compliant lasers on humans. If you search ebay for other cold lasers, you will notice the other
non -FDA cleared lasers state clearly that their products are not meant for humans. For more information you should check with a malpractice lawyer to make sure you are covered using non-FDA cleared lasers in your practice.
FDA WARNING ON COLDLASERTHERAPY.US
The FDA states, "A review of our records reveals that you have not obtained marketing approval or clearance before you began offering your product for sale, which is a violation of the law."

Isn't Everybody FDA Approved |
Does it seem that every Laser/LED on the web is FDA approved? Here is a bit of history on why.
Microlight Corporation and Erchonia were the first to get FDA clearance back in 2002. Microlight, for example, spent millions of dollars over 10 years, submitting countless research and two double blind studies (Baylor & GM Motors) to get their ML830® cleared by the FDA. Erchonia had a similar situation. To our knowledge, no other laser company has ever received a new specific FDA clearance.
NOW EVERYBODY ELSE.....
Let's say you had the option to wait years, spending millions of dollars on research/studies or you had an option to basically spend 39 cents on a stamp and get your product FDA Cleared. Which route would you go?
Welcome to the world of LED/SLD/Heat Lamp devices.
THE HEAT LAMP.....
Their is an old FDA clearance on record that states something like this: "Indicated for temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain, arthritis and muscle spasm, relieving stiffness, promoting relaxation tissue, and to temporarily increase local blood circulation where heat is indicated."
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH LASER THERAPY ?
Nothing (LOL). But these clever companies determined they could piggy-back on this heat lamp's FDA clearance and fool the market into thinking they were buying FDA-cleared lasers. A few companies have even piggy-backed on the ML830® clearance in the last few years.
BOTTOM LINE......
The ML830® Laser has been in the market for about 15 years, with hundreds of studies and research supporting it. Be careful that you are not suckered into buying a LED device that a salesman claims is as good as a ML830® Laser. If he can produce even ONE double blind study supporting his claims, then buy the LED......

Some manufacturers produce devices with super luminous diodes (SLD) or light emitting diodes (LED). Monochromatic non-coherent light can be helpful for superficial wound healing, however, numerous studies have shown that lasers are far more effective due to their unique properties and penetration depth. Many super luminous & light emitting diode products are usually very low powered (typically 5mW-15mW), and much of this energy is scattered, therefore requiring longer treatment times.
See the chart below to see how typical light penetrates the skin. LED’s will normally penetrate less then 1cm. SLD’s are more powerful and can penetrate about 2.5 cm. But Lasers at 830nm can penetrate 5 cm. Far more effective then SLD’s or LED’s.
